Taiwan president promises full inquiry after deadly metro stabbing
Authorities say a 27-year-old suspect, wanted for evading military service, set off smoke bombs at Taipei’s main metro station during Friday evening rush hour and went on a stabbing spree.
The rampage claimed three lives and left at least 11 others injured, according to updated police figures.
The suspect later died by suicide, Taipei’s mayor confirmed. Officials described the incident as a “deliberate act,” but the motive remains unclear.
President Lai expressed condolences to the victims’ families and promised full accountability. “I want to express condolences to those who tragically lost their lives in last night’s horrific, violent attack, and to extend my sympathy to their families,” he said. He added that a “full and thorough investigation” would be conducted to provide the public with the complete truth.
Lai also called for enhanced caution and preparedness, emphasizing that rapid response forces must arrive quickly and be capable of stopping such attacks. He urged that these units be “trained and equipped for counter-terrorism operations” to ensure public safety.
Police chief Chang Jung-hsin noted that the suspect appeared to have acted alone, following a planned path to target victims randomly, while the investigation into his motive continues.
Violent crimes are rare in Taiwan, with the last comparable metro stabbing occurring in 2014, when four people were killed.
